Like many of us, I’ve struggled to keep track of warranties, forgotten when an appliance needed maintenance, and scrambled to find receipts when something broke down. But more than anything, I couldn’t confidently tell you exactly what I own or how much it's all worth.

This is a concept project that I explored to address a specific problem or opportunity I identified. The details shared may be fictional or aspirational and do not necessarily reflect actual reality.

We own so many things, but we don’t really manage them. Our homes are full of valuable items, yet there’s no seamless way to track their lifespan, care, and worth over time. I wanted to create something that makes it effortless to stay organised without feeling like a chore.

Tracking what You own, without the hassle

People don’t want to spend their time filling out endless forms just to keep track of what they own. Qualitative research reinforced this—too many input fields can feel overwhelming, leading users to abandon the process altogether. So, the challenge was to design an experience that captured essential details while feeling light and intuitive, to make the app feel like an intelligent assistant rather than just a digital filing cabinet.

Fluid disclosure

Find it fast, add it instantly

Research showed that nine times out of ten, users open the app to either find an item or add a new one. In line with this, I designed the home screen as an action launchpad, centred around two floating action buttons placed within thumb reach. One for search and one for new entries. The FABs make primary tasks apparent and effortless.

Beyond these two core functions, the home screen subtly provides smart insights without overwhelming the user. A clean, card-based layout displays the most relevant information at a glance.

Expiring warranties surface first, with a clear call to action to renew or check coverage. Upcoming maintenance reminders follow next, helping users stay ahead of repairs, and then a display of recently added items, ensuring that new entries are easily accessible.

Intuitive item cataloguing

Instead of forcing users to manually type out every specification, I leaned on automation and smart defaults. The app uses barcode scan, receipt imports, and AI-assisted categorisation to do the heavy lifting, reducing friction from manuel entry, and making cataloging as quick as taking a photo.

In preview, I avoided rigid, spreadsheet-like structures in favor of flexible cards that present key information upfront, with deeper details progressibly disclosed on tap. Notifications are the outlier. For example, if a warranty is expiring soon, that’s highlighted before anything else.

Caring for what you own

Most homes are dynamic spaces with a collection of artefacts that require care. The app seamlessly integrates maintenance tracking, with timely reminders for servicing appliances, replacing filters, or checking on valuable electronics. These reminders offer helpful insights, some with links to verified DIY practices.

This is another area where automation makes a difference. Instead of users having to remember when their washing machine needs servicing or when to change the air filters, the app predicts maintenance schedules based on manufacturer recommendations and usage patterns.

Warranty & insurance Management

The idea of tracking warranties and insurance came from a simple but frustrating reality: warranties only matter when something breaks, and by then, they’re either lost, expired, or buried in an unread email thread. I wanted to fix that. Instead of expecting users to manually input every detail, the app automatically extracts warranty information from uploaded receipts or emails, saving users from unnecessary effort. Expiry dates are tracked in the background, with reminders sent before they lapse—so no more last-minute searches or unexpected repair costs. Insurance details are handled with the same care, ensuring that policies, claim procedures, and coverage information are easily accessible when needed.

Inventory Audits & Depreciation Tracking

The app's Initial focus was organisation, but I realised users also wanted a clearer view of their assets. How much is that five-year-old TV worth? Which items should be insured, sold, or replaced?

To help, the app estimates depreciation through models that pull recent pricing data from e-commerce platforms like Amazon and eBay. This gives people view of their asset's value. For expensive items like electronics and appliances, this can be incredibly useful when deciding whether to sell, replace, or repair something.

Audit mode allows users to periodically confirm which items they still have, flag outdated belongings, and track items they’ve sold, donated, or discarded. This process is gamified, when they click the audit push notification which then launches the app, the user is prompted with a dialogue asking them if they still own that item It’s not just about keeping a list—it’s about keeping that list meaningful.

Smart Search & Filtering

Search and filtering had to feel effortless. A home inventory app only works if users can find what they need instantly, whether it’s a serial number for a tech support call or a specific document for an insurance claim. I designed the search function to be smart and forgiving—misspellings, abbreviations, and partial entries all lead to the right results. Filtering is contextual, so whether a user wants to view only electronics, locate items in a specific room, or check warranties expiring in the next month, the app presents the most relevant information without clutter.

Smart export & reports

Exporting and reporting functions are valuable in instances like insurance claims, moving, or financial planning, users can generate a beautifully structured PDF of their home inventory with a single tap.

Security & privacy

This app stores personal information, purchase details, warranties, and insurance documents, so security protocols are important. A biometric authentication layer was added with a private vault for sensitive items.

User Profiles & Multi-Device Syncing

Multi-device syncing was an essential consideration from the start. A home inventory is rarely just for one person—families, couples, and even housemates often share responsibility for managing items. The app supports multiple user profiles, allowing different members to contribute to the inventory while maintaining individual access settings. Cloud syncing ensures that everything stays updated across devices, but for those who prefer privacy, local-only storage is an option.

AI-powered insights & automation

From the moment a user adds an item, AI steps in to categorize it automatically. If a user snaps a picture of a product label or scans a barcode, the app can recognize the item, suggest a category, and even pull in specifications like dimensions, power ratings, and typical lifespan. This eliminates the need for tedious manual input and speeds up the process significantly.

AI also identifies patterns—if a certain brand of appliances tends to require frequent repairs, the app can flag this trend and suggest alternatives when it’s time for a replacement.

AI also enhances search and filtering, making it more intuitive. Users don’t have to search with exact names or worry about typos—the system understands context. If a user types “sofa,” but their item is listed as “sectional couch,” AI bridges the gap. It also recognizes natural language queries like “show me items I bought in the last two years” or “list all warranties expiring soon.

”One of my favorite applications of AI in this app is purchase recommendations. If a user logs an item that’s nearing the end of its typical lifespan, the app can provide suggestions for newer models based on usage history and reviews. This isn’t just about pushing replacements—it’s about giving users relevant, helpful insights when they actually need them.

AI isn’t just a layer of automation; it’s the difference between an app that requires constant manual upkeep and one that proactively supports users in managing their belongings. By making the system smarter, the app doesn’t just store information—it becomes a trusted tool for organization, financial awareness, and everyday convenience.
